| Cork thwart Kilkenny's Grand Slam bid - Sunday, August 30, 2009
|
Cork 2-23 Kilkenny 0-16
Kilkenny's bid for a second successive clean sweep of All-Ireland hurling titles faltered at the first hurdle in Dungarvan yesterday when Cork powered to a 10-point victory in the intermediate final.
With their outstanding midfielder Leigh Desmond helping himself to 0-10, the Rebels claimed their seventh All-Ireland in the grade in impressive fashion. They led from the fifth minute after Luke O'Farrell goaled to give them a 1-1 to 0-2 lead. They extended their lead to 1-7 to 0-6 by the 20th minute before the holders cut the gap to 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time.
Youghal clubman Desmond accounted for 0-6 of Cork's first half tally, while Ray Carey and O'Farrell also had minors.
With the wind to their backs in the second half, Johnny Keane's side gradually pulled away and had stretched their lead to 1-15 to 0-11 by the end of the third quarter. Kilkenny battled bravely, but a brilliant overhead pull to the net from full forward Eamon Collins on the stroke of full-time following a Desmond delivery copperfastened the Rebels' first title since 2006.
