Press Release from Cork GAA Clubs Forum - Thursday, October 22, 2009
CORK GAA CLUBS FORUM MEETS WITH CORK COUNTY BOARD OFFICERS ON GAA STRATEGIC PLAN

As a result of a number of media queries, and to ensure that all clubs, their members and the general Cork GAA community are kept up to date with current happenings, thereby dispelling any unhelpful and misguided speculation, the Cork GAA Clubs Forum decided to issue the following News Release, following their recent meeting with senior Cork County Board Officers.

Six members of the Cork GAA Clubs Forum met with County Board Chairman, Gerry O’Sullivan, Runai, Frank Murphy as well as Peter Hanan of O’Kelly Sutton Consulting on Monday October 19th at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, at the request of the County Board Officers and Mr Hanan.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the contents of the recently published Cork GAA Clubs Forum Interim Report recommendations for the improvement of GAA structures within the county, in tandem with the County Board’s strategic plan for the county. The Board officers and Mr Hanan were anxious to consider the recommendations contained in the Forum’s Interim Report, as a basis for their forthcoming Strategic Review which will shape the face of Cork GAA for the foreseeable future. This meeting was the first in a series of meetings planned by the Board to gather the views of the GAA in preparation for the County’s Strategic Plan.

Discussions took place on each of the three key areas of the Interim Report; namely;

* Democratic Structures
* Communications
* Development issues

In the wide ranging discussion(s) that ensued, the Board Officers accepted the bona fides of the Forum and thanked them for their extensive work and research which they had undertaken in the preparation of a very worthwhile document. Motions for the County Convention drafted by the Cork GAA Clubs Forum on behalf of clubs were also discussed at the meeting. Both the Chairman and Runai listened attentively to the cogent arguments espoused in relation to the proposed motions but did not express any opinion as to whether or not they would support them at the forthcoming county convention.

Tomas Ryan, Chairman of the Forum stated at the outset of the meeting “We are willing to assist the board in compiling the content for the strategic plan for the GAA in our county. We have consulted with all the clubs throughout the county since we were formed last March, at the behest of the clubs, and the thoughts and concerns of those club members are contained in our interim and soon to be launched, final report.

Clubs are looking for equitable and democratic representation on the board and are also seeking reforms in the voting procedures and other matters that impact on all clubs regardless of their status. It is hoped that motions submitted by clubs to County Convention will address these issues and that these motions will be supported by all in an effort to streamline the methods with which the GAA operates within the county. Adoption of these motions will hopefully re-establish Cork as the leading county within Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and further strengthen the pre imminence of Gaelic Games within the county.”
